In
1989 a meeting was arranged between representatives from the R.N.I.B.,
Age Concern, Social Services and other interested parties, to discuss
the possibility of setting up an organisation to promote the welfare
of blind and partially sighted people in West Cumbria. In order to
further the project, two public meetings were held in the Princess
Hall, Workington. Invitations to attend were sent to blind and partially
sighted members of the public.
20 people volunteered to form a steering group, and in June 1990 the
Society was officially launched at an inaugural meeting, in The Calder
Club, in Whitehaven.
Social Services, Age Concern, Copeland Visually Impaired, The Handicapped
Trust, and many people with visual impairments attended the meeting.
