Work
began on the purchase and refurbishment of 22 Lowther Street, Whitehaven.
As work progressed on the building, Pat Fitzgerald, Project Manager
and Angela Byrne, Secretary, raised additional funding.
The Francis C Scott Foundation, Whitehaven Regeneration Trust, Lloyds
TSB Foundation, Harold Bridges Trust, Royal National Institute for
the Blind and British Steel donated funds to help with refurbishment
and equipment costs.
Included in the new building would be ‘The Localizer’,
beacons that emit directional sound to guide people out of the building
in the event of a fire. The system was designed by Manchester-based
company, Sound Alert Ltd, and £6,000 for the system was kindly
donated by BNFL.
